Slitter Lines
PLC-based control of 15 axes of motion, all with electronic gearing capabilities, to provide control of narrow-web slitting and sheeting equipment.
Industries Served:
Metal Fabrication, Paper Conversion, Product Slitting & Winding Applications
Products Used
- Mid-range 90-30 PLC
- PLC-based Axis Positioning Module (APM)
- Operator Workstation
The Advantages:
- Increases precision of control in both winding speed and pitch of the wind.
- More efficient and streamlined than traditional winding systems that require adjustable winding speed and pitch.
- Accurate electronic gearbox capabilities.
- Independent gear ratio referenced from one master velocity signal.
How It Works:
- A coil of unprocessed material is fed into the front end of the machine, the payoff, which has polyurethane rollers that form the material into an S loop to relieve tension.
- From the payoff, the material travels into the slitter, which consists of two scoring heads and an exit head that parts the material into 13 separate strands.
- The 13 strands finally go to the winder where they are wound onto separate traversing spools.
- Scoring heads rotate more slowly than the exit head, controlling tension in the feed.
- To control line speed, the PLC uses an analog output as velocity command to the drive for the slitter's exit head. This acts as the system master speed reference, helping to ensure increased machine throughput and product consistency and quality.
